Use this when the form asks for a head-and-shoulders photo on a plain background and you do not want to send the original to a cutout website. LocalPix Remove background runs ormbg (Apache-2.0) in the tab and downloads a transparent PNG. Passport photo is only a route placeholder in this MVP — it does not crop to a country’s millimetre spec. Do the cutout now; measure and crop to the printed size the form actually names.
When to open which page
- Remove background — the working tool. Pick a JPEG, PNG, or WebP portrait. Output is a transparent PNG. RMBG is not used.
- Passport photo — coming later for spec-accurate sizing. Open it only to confirm it is still a stub, then return to Remove background.
- iPhone HEIC — many camera rolls are HEIC. Convert with HEIC to JPG first if the cutout tool cannot decode the file. See iPhone HEIC to JPG for email and forms.
White background vs transparent PNG
- Transparent — keep the PNG when you will place the portrait yourself, or when a designer asked for a cutout. Check hair and glasses edges at 100% before you submit.
- White (or the colour the form names) — most passport, visa, and school ID uploads want a flat light backdrop, not a checkerboard. The tool does not paint that backdrop for you. Composite the PNG onto white in any local editor, then export the JPEG or PNG the portal lists.
- Do not guess the colour. “Light” is not always pure white. Read the form. A grey or off-white requirement will fail a pure-white JPEG.
- JPEG flattens alpha. If you run the cutout through Compress to KB, you leave PNG and lose transparency. Compress only after the backdrop is already correct.
Steps (local, 0-byte upload)
- Read the form’s background and file-type rules before you edit.
- Open Remove background. Optional: follow How to self-prove 0-byte upload or Verify local with DevTools Network open.
- Choose the portrait from disk. ormbg weights download only after you run — that is model delivery, not your photo leaving the device.
- Download the transparent PNG (local
blob:URL). - If the portal wants white, composite locally, then crop to the stated pixel size. If the file is still over the portal’s KB cap, use Compress to KB on the flattened image.
Practical limits
- The model resizes large images toward 1024×1024 for inference. A tiny, blurry source will not become a sharp ID photo.
- Busy hair, veils, and glasses can leave fringe. Reject the result rather than submitting a halo.
- This is not a compliance check. LocalPix does not certify ICAO, visa, or school rules.
FAQ
Does my ID photo leave the device?
No. Processing runs in your browser with ormbg. Your image bytes are not uploaded to LocalPix servers. Prove it with Verify local or the homepage section How to self-prove 0-byte upload.
White or transparent?
The tool outputs a transparent PNG. Composite onto the colour the form names — often white — before you upload to a portal that rejects alpha.
Will passport-photo crop it to the official size?
Not yet. Passport photo is a placeholder. Crop to the pixel size printed on the form after the cutout.
