Remove background

Drop a photo. Processing stays in this tab. Default model: ormbg (Apache-2.0), downloaded only when you run.

Guides: When to use WASM for local background removal · ID and passport photo background · Product photo, transparent background.

Runs ormbg locally via ONNX Runtime Web (Transformers.js). First run fetches the quantized ONNX (~42 MB, q8) from Cloudflare R2; Hugging Face is the fallback. Later runs use the browser cache. See MODEL.r2Url in assets/bg-remove.js.

How it works

  1. You choose a file — it stays in memory in this tab (not uploaded to LocalPix servers).
  2. On run, the site downloads ormbg q8 (~42 MB) from Cloudflare R2 if not already cached (HF fallback), and shows progress.
  3. Inference uses WebGPU only when a GPU adapter is available; otherwise it uses CPU/WASM directly. Output is a transparent PNG.

Model hosting: primary source is Cloudflare R2 (localpix-models / ormbg/onnx/model_quantized.onnx). Hugging Face onnx-community/ormbg-ONNX remains the fallback. Weights are never committed to git.

FAQ

Do you upload my photo?

No product upload endpoint receives your image for this tool. The only network fetches are the model/runtime from Cloudflare R2 (or Hugging Face fallback) and jsDelivr (CDN).

Why ormbg?

Commercially clear Apache-2.0 default. See licenses. RMBG, BiRefNet, and BEN2 are not used.

Known limits

Large images are resized to 1024×1024 for the model. First load needs ~42 MB free download + runtime memory; low-memory phones (especially older iOS Safari) may fail — try a smaller photo or a desktop browser. WebGPU support varies by OS/browser.

Can I use this for an ID or product photo?

Yes for the cutout: output is a transparent PNG from ormbg only. White ID backdrops and marketplace plates are composited by you. ID photo · Product photo. Passport photo does not size the file yet.
